First the pool table must be dismantled, or what we call "tear down". This process has many different variations depending on the brand and type of pool table you have. Some pool tables will have three pieces of slate and some will have 1 piece. Even professionals sometimes cannot tell by looking at the pool table if it is a 1 or 3 piece slate. If assumed it is a 1 peice slate and handled that way by an amateur one could end up without a pool table because the slate may be broken.
Slate is heavy! Pool table slate dates back througout time as being the ideal choice for the playfield of a pool table due to it's density and abiltiy to make flat, one piece slates that are 8 foot long are generally about 7/8 of an inch thick and have a shipping weight of appox. 400 lbs. After tearing down the pool table it must be transported which can be difficult if you don't have the right equipment and vehicle. After transportation the pool table must be set up or "installed" which is a whole process of screws, levels, nuts, bolts and professional experience working on pool tables.
