Buying a new or used pool table, what should you do?
First let's start out by saying what the larger US pool table companies don't want you to know.
You will more than likely very rarely play on the table. Oh yea at first you will be on it for a week straight playing but fact is in our experience there are only about 5% of you who actually want to play the game to play the game of pool, the rest of the public isn't serious about playing pool, they want a game room because it's cool to have, which is absolutely fine but remember this when you are buying a table or deciding what to purchase. What does this mean? Brand names that you may recognize from TV may not be the bargains you think just because it's a "Brunswick" or as some of you will pronounce "Olefenhouser" (correctly spelled Olhausen) The American pool table companies have had a great run in the past and that's the part that could hurt you, with not much in the way of competition they have managed to get top dollar for their pool tables from dealers and the dealers have managed top dollar from YOU because of this low amount of competitors in the pool table industry.
Recently there have been many imported pool tables come to market with qualities matching a good deal of the US makers which was not a real problem for US pool table companies, all they had to do was to say that because these tables were from China they were inferior, stand up straight and test you on your support of your country resulting in a purchase of their fine, expensive pool tables.
Much has changed, in fact the Chinese have really come a long way in refining their pool tables and keeping costs down in the process which has American pool table companies in what we believe to be a tight squeeze. We now support many of the newer chinese brands because they fit the consumers budget and playing needs. Now we ask when confronted by the supporter of the US brands, why is the pool table the only thing in the household that by no means is allowed to be imported? It's because it's the sales game now, the excuses of the US salesperson in the past don't hold water any longer because of increased quality if the imports. The funny thing is, we used to knock the imports because we had to work on them, it only takes a few years for things to change dramatically, now most installers don't have problems selling or even servicing the imports due to their quality advances. Couple that with a fair asking price and the consumer now has more control over their investment.
We don't think the consumer is dumb, and with a recent move of Olhausen Billiards, a highly respected US manufacturer of good quality we might add, from California to Tennessee for decreased labor costs and decreased shipping costs to distributors on the east coast to keep costs down, well we don't think they packed up and moved their entire company to Tennessee for the whiskey, we believe the consumers are choosing the economical imported pool table over the higher priced US pool table brands.
What all of this really means is that for over 90% of you, when it comes to budget and use of the pool table, listen to logic. Why are you buying the table? Why do you need to spend more? We can all agree that advertising is a great tool for business but McDonalds is a very agressive advertiser and a well known brand name but is McDonalds really the best lunch coice for our health just because we see the golden arches on TV or hear about them on the radio? No, not by any means, they advertise so much just so they can stay at the top of the game, moms cooking was better then good old Micky Dees. Take a look around at the customers next time you're in one, it may even open your eyes to marketing methods of pool tables and brand names or for that matter anything you choose to buy. Anymore pool tables are very alike except the price and service you can expect from the company selling it to you.
If you're in the market for a used or new pool table here is some information on your potential purchase. We feel that buying the right pool table for your needs is the most important factor in selecting the right one.
If you are buying a pool table for your home the selection will be different from buying one for a bar or pool hall. There are many quality brands of pool tables that can be purchased for the home that are relatively inexpensive and are still in excellent condition.
Brand names such as Olhausen, Connelly Billiards, Golden West, Brunswick and some others you might have heard of are not always the best bet for a novice pool table buyer, a common thing we see in our store is that consumers try to educate them selves and they get too smart about the purchase. Out of all internet websites available to give you information on the subject you may come across maybe 10% that actually participate daily in the installation of a pool table so please look into the supported background of your source if that's so important to you. Pool table stores who badmouth competitors and their products generally should be avoided in our opinion as well and can be a very bad source of information on the subject.
The best thing about buying a used pool table is the fact that most of them were installed from a dealer and usually there is no damage or wear to a used pool table besides the felt wear. A pool table stays in good condition because it has no moving parts to wear and is not generally subject to abuse. One can really find some excellent deals on a used pool table if they have time and patience to do a little research about pool tables in advance.
We have found that the buyer that is impulsive has a very high risk of getting a terrible deal. Pool tables are always available in most areas and if the buyer shops around they can save hundreds of dollars on one.
This website caters to the general population of people who just want to find a used pool table for recreational purposes. Our reviews of pool tables are not meant to direct the professional or serious pool player on the purchase of a used pool table, those players fit into a different category of buyers.
